How to Create a Wedding Registry: Step-by-Step (2026)

How to set up a wedding registry in 2026 — when to start, where to register, how many items to add, and how to share it without being awkward.

Step 1 — Pick your retailers

Most couples use 2–3 retailers. A common winning combination:

  • Amazon — broad coverage, easy returns.
  • Crate & Barrel or Williams-Sonoma — nicer cookware, dinnerware.
  • Zola — aggregator that pulls from any store + cash funds + honeymoon fund.

Step 2 — Build the list together

Sit down with your partner for two evenings — not one, two. Walk through every room of the house and your future life: kitchen, dining, bedroom, bathroom, entertaining, travel, hobbies. Add items in three price tiers:

  • $25–$75 for shower gifts and acquaintances.
  • $75–$200 for the majority of guests.
  • $200+ for family and group gifts.

Step 3 — Aim for the right number of items

At least 2 items per guest. A 120-guest wedding should have 240+ active items. Empty registries lead to gift cards — and gift cards are nice but rarely memorable.

Step 4 — Add cash funds for what you actually need

  • Honeymoon fund (broken into experiences: snorkeling, dinner, transfers).
  • Down-payment fund.
  • Home-improvement fund.

Cash funds work best when broken into specific line items, not “send us money.” Guests want to gift something — give them a thing to gift.

Step 5 — Share the link the right way

  • Never on the invitation. Etiquette violation; everyone notices.
  • On your wedding website (linked from the save-the-date and invitation details card).
  • Verbally, when asked.
  • Family members can share it on your behalf if asked.

Step 6 — Refresh as items are purchased

Check your registry every 2–3 weeks. As items get bought, add new ones in the same price tier so guests always have options. The week before the shower and again before the wedding are the busiest purchase windows.

Step 7 — Track for thank-you notes

Keep a single spreadsheet: guest name, gift, date received, thank-you sent. Most registry platforms also export this for you. Send thank-you notes within 2 weeks of receiving each gift (3 months max for everything after the wedding).

Things to skip

  • A formal china set you'll use twice. Add nice everyday dinnerware instead.
  • 20 of the same item.
  • A single $5,000 item with no smaller alternatives.
  • Items that don't fit your current or future home.

Frequently asked questions

When should you create a wedding registry?
About 6 months before the wedding, in time for save-the-dates to link to your wedding website.
How do you create a wedding registry?
Pick 2–3 retailers, build the list together across three price tiers, aim for at least 2 items per guest, add cash funds for what you actually need, and share the link on your wedding website.
Where should you not put your registry link?
Never on the wedding invitation itself — that breaks etiquette. The link belongs on your wedding website and the optional details card.
How many wedding registries should you have?
Two to three. More than three confuses guests; only one feels limited.
Is it okay to register for a honeymoon fund?
Yes — break it into specific experiences (snorkeling, dinners, transfers) instead of a generic cash request.
