Spring weddings (March–May)

Color palette

Blush, sage, lavender, butter yellow, soft blue, coral.

Fabrics

Chiffon, crepe, light silk, linen blends.

Lengths

Midi for daytime, floor-length for formal evening. Avoid heavy mini dresses.

Shoe + bag

Block heels (lawns are still soft), a metallic clutch, a light-knit shawl for chilly evenings.

Summer weddings (June–August)

Color palette

Bright florals, sunny yellow, coral, royal blue, rich green.

Fabrics

Cotton blends, linen, breathable chiffon — never heavy satin.

Lengths

Midi for outdoor day weddings; gowns for resort or black-tie evenings.

Tips

  • Lined dresses photograph better than unlined ones in bright sun.
  • Avoid white, ivory, pale beige and champagne — all read bridal.
  • Sandal-style heels for grass; block heels for sand.

Fall weddings (September–November)

Color palette

Burgundy, rust, deep emerald, navy, plum, mustard, terracotta.

Fabrics

Velvet, satin, heavier silks, jacquard.

Lengths

Midi for cocktail, floor-length for formal evening. Long sleeves are very on-trend.

Tips

  • A long velvet dress is the safest fall-evening choice ever.
  • Layer with a structured blazer for outdoor ceremonies.
  • Closed-toe heels read seasonal; strappy sandals look out of place.

Winter weddings (December–February)

Color palette

Burgundy, hunter green, navy, deep purple, black, ivory-not-allowed.

Fabrics

Velvet, satin, sequins, heavy crepe, brocade.

Lengths

Floor-length for evening, midi for daytime. Long sleeves or 3/4 sleeves.

Tips

  • A wool coat + boots to the venue, change of shoes in the bag.
  • Tights are completely acceptable — sheer black or skin-tone.
  • Sequins, metallics and rich jewel tones photograph beautifully under indoor lighting.

Universal rules

  • Never white — including ivory, cream, champagne, blush at all-white weddings.
  • Match formality. Read the dress code and the venue type.
  • Walkable shoes. Lawn = block heel, sand = flat or wedge.
  • One statement. Either a bold color, a bold accessory or a bold hairstyle — not all three.

Where to shop

For one-off wedding-guest dresses, Rent the Runway and Nuuly cover most seasons. For purchases, Lulus, Reformation, Asos, Anthropologie and BHLDN have year-round wedding-guest sections updated by season.

Frequently asked questions

What colors should a wedding guest avoid?
Anything white, ivory, cream, champagne or pale beige — all read bridal. Also avoid the bridal-party color if you know it.
What should I wear to a fall wedding?
Velvet, satin or jacquard in jewel tones — burgundy, emerald, navy, plum. Long sleeves and midi or floor lengths read seasonal.
What should I wear to a winter wedding?
Velvet or satin in deep colors; sequins for evening; long sleeves; closed-toe shoes; a wool coat to and from the venue.
Can wedding guests wear short dresses?
Yes for cocktail, semi-formal and beach weddings. For black-tie and formal evening weddings, midi or floor length is expected.
Is it okay to wear the same dress to two weddings?
Completely — if the guest lists don't overlap. Swap shoes, bag and hairstyle and it reads as a different outfit.
