How to use these numbers

The defaults match the most recent industry averages from The Knot Real Weddings Study and WeddingWire's annual reports. They are a starting point, not a rule. If you care more about food and music than about flowers, drag those sliders up and the others down — the totals update live.

Where couples most often overspend

  • Bar. A full open bar can add $40–$80 per guest. A beer + wine + one signature cocktail bar usually saves 30–40%.
  • Flowers. Centerpieces on every guest table add up fast. Half tall, half low (or candles only on alternating tables) looks luxe and costs less.
  • Stationery suite. Foil + letterpress + custom envelope liners can double the print bill. Pick one specialty finish, keep the rest simple.

Where couples most often underspend

  • Photography. Below 10% of budget and you'll likely regret it. This is the only thing you take home.
  • Buffer. Real weddings come in 8–15% over plan. Keep at least 5% in the misc line.

Frequently asked questions

How is the wedding budget split by category?
On average US couples spend 22% on venue & rentals, 23% on catering & bar, 12% on photo & video, 8% on flowers, 7% on attire & beauty, 7% on music, and the remaining ~21% across stationery, cake, rings, transport, planner, gifts and a buffer.
What percentage of a wedding budget should go to the venue?
Roughly 20–25% of total budget for venue and rentals combined. Couples who choose all-inclusive venues often see this number absorb catering and run higher.
How much should I budget for catering and bar?
About 23% of total, or $80–$200 per guest including alcohol depending on city and service style. Plated dinners cost more than buffet or family-style.
What's the average wedding cost in the US?
Around $33,000 in 2025, but regional ranges vary widely — under $20,000 in much of the Midwest, $50,000+ in major metros.
